Gautam Gambhir, the former cricketer turned politician, is a prominent figure in Indian politics, was the Member of Parliament (MP) representing West Delhi. Born on October 14, 1981, in New Delhi, India, Gambhir has had a remarkable journey from the cricket pitch to the political arena.
Gautam Gambhir made his debut in international cricket in 2003, and over the years, he established himself as one of India's finest openers. He played a pivotal role in several significant cricketing moments, most notably in the 2007 ICC World Twenty20 final and the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup final, where he played crucial innings that led India to victory. Gambhir was known for his tenacity, grit, and determination, which reflected his approach to both cricket and his later foray into politics.
In 2019, Gambhir entered the world of politics, joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). In the same year, he contested the Lok Sabha elections from East Delhi constituency and emerged victorious with a substantial margin. His electoral success demonstrated his popularity and the trust that the people of West Delhi had placed in him.
As the MP of West Delhi, Gambhir was actively involved in addressing the concerns of his constituents and working towards their welfare. He focused on various key issues such as healthcare, education, infrastructure development, and women's safety. Gambhir has also championed initiatives related to sports development, leveraging his cricketing experience to promote sports at the grassroots level.
However, the former Indian cricketer decided to quit politics ahead of the 2024 General Elections to focus on his cricket commitments and requested the party president to release him from his duties.
Notably, after having a successful season as a mentor for Kolkata Knight Riders, Gambir was appointed as the head coach of the Indian men's cricket team in July 2024.
